Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) are now officially included in the latest edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) 11, Chapter 4L. This update provides clear guidelines for the deployment of RRFBs, facilitating their adoption across various jurisdictions without the need for separate approvals.
The MUTCD outlines specific criteria for the installation of RRFBs, taking into account roadway configurations, traffic volumes, speed limits, and pedestrian traffic patterns. These guidelines ensure the effective use of RRFBs to improve visibility and safety at pedestrian crossings.
According to the MUTCD, RRFBs should be installed at both ends of crosswalks. For crossings equipped with medians or pedestrian refuge islands, RRFBs are recommended to be positioned on the right side of the crosswalk and on the median, enhancing visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.
The guidelines also highlight the importance of incorporating accessible pedestrian features alongside RRFB installations, promoting safety for all community members. As RRFBs gain prevalence, community outreach programs are vital to educate the public on the purpose and proper use of these beacons, further improving safety outcomes.
The average cost associated with RRFB installation ranges from $4,500 to $52,000 each, with the average cost estimated at $22,250; at Availed Technologies, we often quote half of the average cost. These costs include the complete system installation with both labour and materials incorporated.
